Brand Story : patagonia
A fellow B-corp and leader of the pack in conscious consumerism for decades now, Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers. Alpinism remains at their heart – along with skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. These are all silent sports. None require a motor; none deliver the cheers of a crowd. In each sport, reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection between nature and us.
They blend simplicity, utility, and sustainability in the design of their products, and the lifestyle of their brand. They’re well aware their business activity – from lighting stores to dyeing shirts – creates pollution as a by-product. So they work to reduce those harms by using recycled polyester and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive cotton. They also have an incredible repair program called ‘Worn Wear.’ That’s right, patches are cool again.
For Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them. They donate at least 1% of sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world, and have an amazing environmental grants program. Protection and preservation of the environment isn’t what they do after hours, it’s the reason for every day’s work.
